Collecting website feedback without making anyone log in

By Vadym Rusin · Last updated: August 2026

The fastest way to lose a review round is to put a signup form in front of the reviewer. Most feedback tools solved half of this: the reviewer gets guest access, while the person running the review still needs an account, a workspace, and a plan. Here is who requires what, audited in August 2026.

Bottom line

Nearly every feedback tool now offers no-login guest access for reviewers; that fight is won. The account has just moved to the other side of the table: the author still signs up, configures a workspace, and pays per seat. MarkLayer is the exception that drops the account on both sides: creating a review and leaving feedback are equally anonymous, and the link is the entire onboarding.

Who requires what

Audited against each tool's own onboarding, August 2026:

The half the industry didn't fix

Guest review is a solved problem; the vendors solved it because clients forced them to. What remains is the author-side stack: create an account, verify an email, make a workspace, add the project, configure the share settings, and then send the link. For a standing agency workflow that setup cost amortizes. For the other cases, a one-off design review, a quick QA pass on staging, feedback on a page you don't own, the setup regularly costs more than the review.

That asymmetry is a deliberate part of MarkLayer's design: there is no author account to create because there are no accounts. Open the page, annotate, share the link. The staging-site walkthrough shows the full client flow, including password-protected staging.

What a reviewer can do without logging in

No-login access differs in depth. In most tools, a guest can leave a comment and little else. In MarkLayer, the person opening a share link gets the same surface as the person who created it: drawing tools, threaded replies, live cursors on a shared call, and comment statuses, so "guest" is not a second-class mode. If your review rounds involve back-and-forth rather than a one-shot comment dump, check this dimension before choosing a tool; it is rarely on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

Which website feedback tools require no account for reviewers?
Most modern ones: MarkLayer, Pastel, Markup.io, BugHerd, Marker.io, Volley, and Feedbucket all accept feedback from reviewers without a signup. The differences are on the author side and in what the reviewer can do without an account.
Which tools require no account for anyone?
MarkLayer. There are no accounts in the product: the person creating the review, the reviewers, and any AI agent connected over MCP all operate through the share link. AnnotateWeb is also account-free but deletes work after 2 minutes of inactivity.
Why does login friction matter so much for client feedback?
Because the reviewer never chose the tool and owes it nothing. A client asked to create an account to leave a comment routinely declines and sends an annotated PDF or a phone screenshot instead, and the structured review round dies. Practitioner reviews of feedback tools consistently rank no-login access as the deciding adoption factor.
Is anonymous feedback a security risk?
The link is the access control, the same model as a private Google Doc link. MarkLayer share ids are unguessable random tokens; anyone with the link can view, which is the property that makes client review frictionless. For work that must not leak, keep links in private channels and let them expire (MarkLayer share links expire 90 days after last access).
